Hiring for your preschool? Write the role like this

The same vacancy, written two ways, gets very different numbers of applications. What to put in, what to leave out, and why the salary band is not optional.

Preschool vacancies in Bengaluru are not hard to fill because there are no teachers. They are hard to fill because the adverts do not tell a teacher enough to decide, so the ones who would have been a good fit never respond and the ones who do respond are applying to everything.

Publish the salary band

This is the single change with the largest effect, and it is the one schools resist most. "Salary as per industry standards" tells an experienced teacher that the number is probably low, so she does not apply; it tells an inexperienced one nothing, so she does. You end up interviewing the wrong shortlist.

A band — say ₹18,000 to ₹24,000 — costs you nothing you were not going to pay anyway, and it filters out both the candidate who needs ₹35,000 and the awkward conversation in week three.

Say where you actually are

Not "Bengaluru" and not "East Bengaluru". The locality. Commute is the biggest single reason preschool teachers turn down offers and the biggest reason they resign, so a teacher who lives fifteen minutes away needs to be able to see that from the listing.

Describe the day, not the person

Most job adverts are a list of adjectives — "energetic, passionate, patient" — which every candidate will simply agree to. Replace them with facts about the job: the section and age group, how many children, whether there is an assistant, the hours a teacher actually leaves, whether Saturdays are working, what happens in the summer.

  • Grade or age group, and section size
  • Whether an assistant teacher is in the room
  • Real start and end times, not the official ones
  • Saturday policy and vacation policy
  • Whether you will train someone who is close but not there yet
The listings that fill fastest are the ones that read like they were written by someone who has done the job, because they were.

Say whether you will train

A large share of good preschool candidates are one qualification short of your stated requirement. If you would in fact hire a warm, capable teacher with two years of experience and no NTT, say so — otherwise your own requirement is filtering out the person you would have hired.

Then move quickly

Preschool candidates are usually talking to two or three schools at once and will accept the first reasonable offer, because the alternative is another week of uncertainty. A school that takes nine days to schedule a demo class loses to one that takes two, regardless of which pays more.

If you would rather not run any of this yourself, that is what EduHire does: you describe the role, and we bring you trained teachers who already live within a few kilometres of your gate. You pay only when someone joins.
